Lab Safety Rules

1.Never perform unauthorized experiments or use any equipment or instruments without proper instructions. 2.Follow all written and verbal instructions given by the instructor at all times. If you do not understand something, ASK! 3.Proper eye and skin protection is to be worn at all times. 1.Goggles protect the eyes. 2.Gloves protect the hands. 3.Lab aprons/coats protect the clothes and skin.

4. Proper clothing must be worn – no loose sleeves, dangling jewelry, or open shoes. Long hair must be tied back. 5. Do not eat or drink in the laboratory. 6. Every chemical is dangerous. Avoid tasting, touching, or smelling any chemical unless told to do so. 7. Nothing is to leave the lab unless checked out to you in writing by the instructor. 8. Never horseplay or do practical jokes in the lab.

9. Never force glass tubing into a cork or stopper. 10. Always slant test tubes away from yourself and others when heating them. 11. Discard liquids or solids as indicated by the instructor. 12. Keep all non-laboratory materials other than notebooks away from all stations. 13. Notify the instructor IMMEDIATELY in the event of an accident, no matter how small.

14. Never work alone – a teacher should be present at all times in the laboratory. 15. Do not use laboratory glassware for anything other than its intended use. 16. Complete all pre-labs and read instructions before beginning the lab. 17. Always work in a well-ventilated area. 18. Clean up your workstation and laboratory when an experiment is completed. 19. Be alert and cautious at all times – do not leave experiments unattended.

20. Labels and equipment instructions should be read carefully and multiple times. 21. Wash hands with soap and water after performing all experiments. 22. Before leaving the room, close all containers and turn off electrical equipment. 23. If a chemical should splash into your eyes or on your skin, immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes. Tell the teacher immediately as well. 24. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Place the glass in the proper receptacle.

25. Examine glassware before each use. Never use chipped, cracked, or dirty glassware. 26. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water. The glassware may shatter. 27. Heated glassware will remain very hot for a long time. Be very careful when handling it. Allow glassware to cool before touching or placing it on a desk.

28. Know the location of the following safety equipment: –Fire extinguisher –Safety shower –Eye wash station –Fire alarm pulls –First aid kits
