The Danube River is an important waterway international river, flowing through 10 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Republic of Moldavia, and Serbia)and it has tributaries in other seven countries. It also crosses 4 capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade.

The Danube river is the second longest river of Europe after Volga, being also the only European river that flows from West to East. It has its sources in the Black Forest Mountains,in Germany, under the form of two small rivers called Brigah and Breg, that spring out under the Kandel Peak (1241 m). These two small rivers join themselves in the town of Donaueschingen (678 altitude) in the courtyard of Furstenberg Castle. The Danuve flows through South -East, for a distance of aproximatly km, until it reaches the Black Sea. The Danube Delta is formed at this encountering.

In Germany, the Danube has: on the right shore 678,6 km, on the left shore 687,0 km, and it passes throgh its capital, Berlin.

In Austria, the Danube has : 357,5 km on the right bank, 321,5 km on the left bank, and it crosses its capital, Vienna.

In Slovakia, the Danube has : 22,5 km on the right shore, 172,1 km On the left one, and it crosses its capital, Bratislava.

In Hungary, the river has: on the right bank 471,2 km and on the left one 275,2 km. It passes through its capital, Budapest.

In Croatia, the Danube flows only on the right shore, for a distance of 137,5 km.

In Serbia, the Danube has : on the right shore 449,9 km, on the left shore 358,0 km, and it crosses its capital Belgrade.

In Bulgaria the Danube flows on the right shore for a distance of 471,6 km.

In Romania, the Danube has on the right bank 354,1 km, and on the left one 1050 km.

In the Republic of Moldavia is has on the left shore 0,6 km.

In Ukraine it has on the left shore 79,6 km.

The Iron Gates is the name of a gorge that forms part of the boundary between Serbia and Romania. In its wide part in comprises 134 km of the river, and in the narrow part just the hydroelectric power dam near the Romanian town Orsova. In the Eastern part of The Iron Gates one can find the Trajan Bridge, the oldest bridge on the Danube, constructed during the Roman Empire. The gorge separates Romania at North and Serbia at South. The Danube separates at this point the Carpathian Mountains from the Balkans.

The modern Danube Delta began forming after 4,000 B.C. in a gulf of the Black Sea, when the sea rose to its present level. A sandy barrier blocked the Danube gulf where the river initially built its delta. Upon filling the gulf with sediments, the delta advanced outside the estuary, buiding several successive lobes (Sulina, Kilia, St. George). The Danube Delta is a low alluvial plain, mostly covered by wetlands and water. It consists of an intricate pattern of marshes, channels, streamlets and lakes.

The Danube Delta (3446 km), laying in its larger part in the region of Dobruja, Romania, and partially in Ukraine, is the largest and best preserved European deltas.

The Danube Delta is limited at South-West by the Dobruja Hills, at North it forms the Border with Ukraine, and at East it flows in the Black Sea. The Delta is crossed by the parallel 45° North latitude and by the meridian 29° East Latitude. It comprises together with the lagoon area Razim-Sinoe 5050km2, out of which 732km2 belong to Ukraine. The Romanian Delta has an area of 2540km2. The 67 million tones of alluvium brought by the Danube River increase the surface of the Delta with aproximately 40m2 per year.

The Danube River empties into the Black Sea in Romania, forming thus the Danube Delta. It is one of the most beautiful deltas in Europe and also a natural biosphere reserve.

Gura Portitei is a small fishing village situated somewhere between The Danube and the Black Sea, and it has become what Vama Veche resort once was : an isolated place, where people go in search for calm and relaxation. The tourists have to take a passenger ship or a motorboat to reach this destination full of natural savage charm.
