2007 Physics Run Status STAR Collaboration mtg June 12, 2007, Berkeley California Bill Christie Outline Overview of BUR/Goals for Fy07 Run Collider Performance Status of progress on reaching Data Set Goals Summary of Low Energy Test run (root(s) = 9.1 GeV) Other items worked on during run (e.g. DAQ1000, MTD, FMS, HFT, TOF) Overview of Shutdown plan Summary

From W. Fischer Doc. Ver. 6/1/06 To meet our AuAu goals we anticipate needing ~1.8 nb -1 of Delivered luminosity To meet our d-Au goals we anticipate needing ~120 nb-1 of Delivered luminosity

What a “typical” good Collider day looked like for FY07 Run Usual fill is 103 bunches in each ring, with Intensities/bunch of ~ 1.15 x 10 9 ions. Some debate during the run, but for the majority of the run the planned store length was 5 hrs. Typical starting collision rates were 25 to 30 kHz. N.B. for top energy AuAu at RHIC, each kHz of rate = 1 x cm -2 s -1. Typically dumping stores with rates of ~ 5 kHz. This is ~ 2.5 times the RHIC design luminosity. When really going well, stores were turned around in as little as 20 minutes. The Collider reached one of its enhanced luminosity goals, achieving a store averaged luminosity > 8 x cm -2 s -1

The Collider has delivered close to the Maximum Estimated Performance Int. Lum. STAR initially estimated was necessary to reach goals.

A look at how the run has gone on a week by week basis

Collider Performance this year is roughly twice that of Year 4

Screen Shot of DAQ Monitoring Screen

FWHM ~ 20 cm Figure courtesy of Lijuan Ruan A Major goal of the run is to accumulate “60 Mevts of usuable min-bias”. This has been estimated to be 75 Mevts of mb-vpd.

Data Update Till June 11, 8:00 am 74% 77% It has been considered via discussions of the Trigger Board and the PWG Convenors whether, if we can’t fully achieve both goals, we should emphasize one (mb or rare) over the other. We’ve always ended up concluding that we’ll try to balance the % achieved for each goal equally.

DAQ Production Running Hours Till June 11, 8:00 am

Scalar plots for a few Low Energy RHIC fills As seen in the plot above, the fill length in RHIC for a low Energy (root(s) = 9.1 GeV) RHIC fill is about 10 minutes. BBC Small tiles Coin. Other efforts worked on throughout the FY07 Physics Run DAQ1000 (aka TPX on DAQ Monitor page): - 1 Readout Board and 29 FEES of new TPC electronics. - Debugged/tuned early in the run, and included in all data runs at the end of the run. Forward Meson Spectrometer (FMS): - Detector itself was characterized/debugged using a rack of CAMAC electronics. - New “QT” Electronics was installed and debugged through the run. Setup, debugging, and tuning of this electronics is continuing. Muon Test Detector (MTD): - Uses large readout pad MRPC chambers. - Trigger setup a bit lengthy, but has been taking data for last ~ month. Time of Flight (TOF): -Have installed a number of Electronics boxes, fibers, cables, etc. in preparation for tray installation for FY08 run. Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT): - Installed PC, electronics box, and small multi plane test detector. - Took data just under Beam pipe outside of STAR magnet. - Finally installed between FTPC and beam pipe, taking some data.

Collider Cooldown Begins September 2007 October 2007

Summary Bringing STAR online, and keeping it running in the manner necessary to accumulate a quality Physics data set is always a large effort. We’ve done it again, and it looks like we’ll have a good Run 7 data set. While it may not have been apparent for particular periods during the run, the Collider has performed well. It is delivering an integrated luminosity close to the maximum pre-run estimate. There are still two weeks to go, but at this point it looks like we’ll come close (~ 85 – 90%) to achieving both our min-bias and our rare trigger data set goals. Significant progress has been, and continues to be, made installing and testing new sub systems and prototypes of planned upgrade technologies into the STAR system. From what I can tell/know so far, the Low Energy Test run was a success.
