A Healthier Tomorrow Begins Today National Immunization Conference 2004

Maximizing Immunization Registry Utilization National Immunization Conference May 12, 2004 – Nashville, TN Jeff Kingsbury, Idaho Immunization Program/CDC Danielle Reader-Jolley, Scientific Technologies Corporation

History of IRIS Legislation passed to allow statewide registry in March Consent must be obtained to be enrolled Participation is optional for providers Contract with 7 Health Departments First Health Department Pilot: May 2000 Statewide registry implementation: January 2001

Status of IRIS Total Patients: Over 215,000 Total Vaccinations: Over 2,000,000 80% of two year olds are enrolled with two or more vaccinations Birthing hospitals enrolling ~300 infants each week 203 health facilities and 539 schools/child cares currently enrolled

2004 Goals Implement and increase number of data exports = more data in the registry Increase use of functions in IRIS: Accountability, Reminder Recall and CASA. Make the providers want to use the registry! Increase training opportunities – easy access to training materials

Maximizing Immunization Registries for Assessment Activities

Objectives: Describe an approach used in Idaho to conduct a statewide assessment of 2 year olds using IRIS and CASA Share strategies for performing quantitative evaluation on large and small scale immunization efforts using registry data

2 Year Old Survey Birth cohort: January 1 – December 31, 2001 Sample pulled from Vital Stats data Statistically significant at the District level

Process Used Use CASA export file from registry using appropriate parameters (saves as text file) Save also as Excel spreadsheet – manually compare registry data to V.S. sample Import into CASA using template Alphabetize Manually delete all unwanted records Run reports

IRIS Export

CASA Import

Results Sample: 2,100 2 year olds statewide Record retrieval, data entry/ accumulation, generation of reports Previously took 2 months – revised methodology 40 hours Methodology can be used to analyze immunization data for a variety of functions: –Counties, Clinic, Physician/Vaccinator, Health Fairs/Special Events, Schools or Child Care Facilities

Utilizing Immunization Registries in Conducting Outreach

Objectives: Present the benefits of using registries in conjunction with planned outreach Share strategies for incorporating registries and outreach activities Discuss methods of using registries to target specific populations and increase attendance

Mobilizing Registries Internet – high speed and/or wireless – for web-based applications Remote PC applications Registry snapshot on CD

Targeted Marketing Utilization of reminder/recall function to select and market to specific demographics Use of registry to identify and select critical populations/pockets of need

Selecting Target

Methods of Contact

Results Increased efficiency with access to complete immunization histories, elimination of fragmented records and duplicate entry Ability to evaluate impact of outreach on coverage levels Increased attendance among target populations Decreased advertising costs
