The Cold War in Asia: China & Korea The Cold War Turns HOT in Asia

I. Revolution in China  Communists led by Mao Zedong take control in China  US feared China would become Allies with the USSR  The US also feared communism would spread throughout the rest of Asia

II. The Korean War  After WWII the Soviets occupied northern Korea  The US occupied southern Korea  Korea was divided at the 38 th Parallel

1950 – War Breaks Out  North Korean Troops armed with Soviet weapons invaded South Korea  Their aim was to unite all Korea under communist rule  Truman ordered US forces to help South Korea  UN troops also aid South Korea

 American general Douglas MacArthur commanded troops  Invaded North Korea - almost reached Northern Border

 China sent 400,000 troops to aid North Korea  Forced South Korean/UN troops back to 38 th parallel

End of the War  By 1953 the war had become a stalemate  In 1953 both sides signed armistice ending hostilities  Korea was divided along the 38 th parallel into North Korea and South Korea  Buffer zone in between – Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)

The Kims – the leaders of North Korea Kim Jong Il Kim Il Sung Kim Jong Un

There is widespread malnutrition and hunger in North Korea today

The Result  Korea is still divided today – many tensions still remain  North Korea became isolated from the world  South Korea kept strong economic ties to US  First example of how the Cold War became “HOT”  Conflict between US and USSR played out in a 3 rd World Nation

Anti-U.S. Propaganda  강박에는 강타로 Meet coercion with hard blows.  응징에는 무자비한 징벌로 Meet castigation with merciless punishment!

미제는 함부로 날뛰지말라 American imperialists, do not rave recklessly!
