PERAMA The history of our city

LOCATION  Perama is a suburb of Piraeus.  It is situated in the southwest of Athens, the capital city of Greece.  It is about 15 kilometres far from Athens.

LOCATION

DISTANCE TO ATHENS

HISTORY  Its history goes back to the ancient times when a famous battleship took place here in 480B.C between Greeks and Persians.  “ Xerxes’s throne”, the place where the powerful leader of the Persian Navy was sitting and watching the battleship, is still there at the top of Mount Egaleo.

BATTLESHIP OF SALAMIS

HISTORY  Modern Perama started being built in the 1920s when lots of refugees came here to start a new life after the hardship they had suffered, and also immigrants from other parts of Greece especially islands.  The first shipyards were built in 1928 so there was enough work for them.  Perama became more and more populated so nowadays more than twenty five thousand people live here.

POPULATION

HISTORY  In the past, until the 70’s lots of people preferred to visit Perama for the excellent seaside tavernas with live music and entertainment until the morning hours. This fact gave a more popular profile of the place.  This was also a good reason for famous directors to choose Perama as the scenery of their films. The couple you are watching are famous actors.

PERAMA IN CINEMA

THE TRAM  Another “symbol “ of Perama was the tram which connected our city with Piraeus..The last route was made lots of years ago … but we hope this line will be in use again…

THE TRAM

CITY OF SHIPBUILDING  The city of ship builders and sailors is closely connected with the “art of shipbuilding”.  The shipyard zone was full of life and work during the previous decades. Unfortunately nowadays very few are still offering people work.

CITY OF SHIPBUILDING

SHIPBUILDING ZONE

CONNECTION WITH SALAMIS  Perama is the “passage “ to Salamis. Large ferry boats take the people to this island every fifteen minutes.

PERAMA TODAY  Our city still remains picturesque with some elements of the old neighbourhood. We can say it’s a modern city with the problems all modern cities have.  But it is still inhabited by hospitable, hardworking, people who know how to fight for their daily lives and appreciate our fellow man and our homeland.
