Ethanol

Key words Microbes Hydration Catalyst Fermentation

Ethanol can be produced by hydration of ethene with steam in the presence of a catalyst. ethene + steam  ethanol C 2 H 4 + H 2 O  C 2 H 5 OH Ethanol can be produced by two different processes: Hydration and fermentation.

Ethanol can also be produced by fermentation with yeast, using renewable resources. This can be represented by: sugar  carbon dioxide + ethanol C 6 H 12 O 6  2CO 2 + 2C 2 H 5 OH Using ethane to make ethanol needs non- renewable crude oil as its raw material, whereas fermentation uses renewable plant material.
