Gender Criticism

Feminist Critical Lens Looks at how women and gender are depicted in art.

Feminism 1.In what ways is patriarchy present in a particular work? How are the effects of patriarchy evident in the lives and attitudes of the characters? 2.Do female characters show signs of resistance to patriarchy? If so, how is this resistance portrayed? 3.How are the concerns unique to women in a particular place/time portrayed in the work? To what extent does this portrayal value those concerns?

Queer Theory Critical Lens Looks at how women and gender are depicted in art.

Queer Theory Critical Lens What does the work contribute to our knowledge of queer, gay, or lesbian experience and history, including literary history? How is queer, gay, or lesbian experience coded in texts that are by writers who are apparently homosexual? Is homophobia seen in the writing? How does the literary text illustrate the problematics of sexuality and sexual "identity," that is the ways in which human sexuality does not fall neatly into the separate categories defined by the words homosexual and heterosexual?
