Water is Unique! Whoa!

Water is Unique! Called The Universal Solvent because it can dissolve almost anything. Only substance found naturally in all 3 states (solid, liquid, gas). Freezes at __ degrees F Boils at ___ degrees F

Its solid form is less dense than its liquid form & so ice floats. This allows many marine organisms to survive through the winter when the top of the ocean freezes. It has a high heat capacity (absorbs a lot of heat before it gets hot). Very high surface tension (that’s why water clumps together in drops rather than spreading out in a thin film)

Cohesion Water molecules are attracted to other water molecules because… Water is a ______________ Oxygen end has a (-) charge & the Hydrogen end has a (+) charge. The positive end of one water molecule is attracted to the negative end of other water molecules. POLAR MOLECULE

Surface Tension Cohesion at the surface of a body of water causes the water to pull itself into a shape with the smallest surface area (a sphere). All the water molecules on the surface are holding each other together (think about Red Rover). Watch ‘em go!

Adhesion Water is attracted to other polar molecules.

Capillary Action Movement of water within the spaces of a porous material due to the forces of adhesion and cohesion.

Heat Transfer Heat is transferred in 3 ways:Heat is transferred in 3 ways: Conduction – direct contact by a solidConduction – direct contact by a solid Convection – heat rises in fluids b/c ofConvection – heat rises in fluids b/c of changes in density Radiation – transported through rays.Radiation – transported through rays. This is cool!
