The Two Piece Tangram The Two Piece Tangram

Use a ruler to measure half way along one edge. Join the mid-point to the opposite corner.

Cut carefully along the line to create your two piece tangram.

Using the two pieces of your tangram, how many different shapes can you make? Only sides of equal length may join. Carefully draw around each shape. Write down the correct Mathematical name for each shape. Mark any equal sides, parallel sides, right angles and equal angles using correct Mathematical notation.

Solutions

Keep the trapezium fixed and move the triangle! Right-angled Triangle What is this shape called? Now flip the triangle!

Irregular Pentagon What is this shape called? Now move the triangle round the trapezium!

Isosceles Trapezium Now flip the triangle….

Parallelogram What is this shape called? …and move the triangle round to the next side

Quadrilateral What is this shape called? …and flip the triangle again…

Irregular Pentagon What is this shape called? Move the triangle round once more.

Irregular Pentagon What is this shape called?

And finally, flip the triangle again to get back to the original Square.
