MODEL LESSON: FUNCTIONS AND EVERYDAY SITUATIONS

Mathematical Goals Articulate verbally the relationships between variables arising in everyday situations Translate between everyday situations and sketch graphs of relationships between variables

Mathematical Goals Interpret algebraic functions in terms of the contexts in which they arise Reflect on the domains of everyday functions and in particular whether they should be discrete or continuous

Four Situations Read through the questions and try to answer them as carefully as you can. Show all you work so I can understand your reasoning.

Whole-class Introduction What does point P tell you? – If only a few paint the bridge, it will take a long time. What about point Q? – A lot of workers will take a shorter time. What about the points R and S, where the line crosses the axes? How can we change this graph so that it is a better model of the situation?

Whole-class Introduction Suppose we know the time it takes for a specific numbers of workers to paint the bridge. What would happen if we doubled the number of workers that paint the bridge? – You would halve the time it takes. What would this look like on the graph? If we halved the number of workers, what would this look like? Will these points be in a straight line? What shape will these points make?

Collaborative Activity: Matching Situations to Graphs The purpose of this structured group work is to make students engage with each others’ reasoning, and take responsibility for the understanding of the group. Please do not rush, spend time justifying fully the pairing of the cards.

Matching Situations and Graphs to Formulas Now match these cards to the pairs you already have on the table. You should be able to do this without using a graphing calculator. After you have matched the function, try to answer the question on the right hand side of the situations card.

Collaborative Activity: Questions Can you group these functions in a way that will help you match them? Which of these functions are linear? Non-linear? Where does this function cross the x- axis/ y-axis? Where does this function reach its maximum/ minimum value?

Collaborative Activity: Questions Show me a function that never crosses the x-axis. How do you know? Show me a function that intersects the origin. How do you know? Show me a function that has two x- intercepts. How do you know?

Follow-up: Lesson Look at your original responses and think about what you have learned this lesson. Spend a few minutes thinking about how you could improve your work. You may want to make notes on your mini-whiteboard. Using what you have learned, try to answer the questions on the new task Another Four Situations.

Whole-class Discussion Give me a situation/graph/algebraic function that was easy to match. – Why was this? Did anyone find this situation/ graph/algebraic function difficult to match or use a different strategy to the one explained?

Classroom Challenges: Formative Assessment Lesson Structure Students… – work on their own, completing an assessment task designed to reveal their current understandings. – participate in a whole-class interactive introduction – work in pairs on a collaborative discussion tasks (in this case, matching situations, graphs, and formulas). – return to their original task or similar and try to improve their responses.
