The Gospel of Matthew “The Crucifixion of Jesus” (pt 3) Matthew 27:45-54

Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.” And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Matthew 27:45-54

And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook; and the rocks were split, and the tombs were opened. And many of the bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and, coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 1. Darkness fell over all the land a sign of God’s judgment on the land and its people more essentially a sign of God “forsaking” His Son in His judicial wrath for sin

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 2. The veil of the temple was torn

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 2. The veil of the temple was torn a sign of the destruction of the temple and the end of the Old (Mosaic) Covenant a sign that the way of unhindered access to God has been made available through the death of Jesus (c.f. Hebrews 9:1-15)

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 2. The veil of the temple was torn as a result we have confidence to enter the presence of God in full assurance of our acceptance by Him (c.f. Hebrews 10:19-22)

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 3. Many saints were raised from the dead Jesus’ death, not only His resurrection, is the basis of new, resurrected life these resurrections signify that Jesus’ death and resurrection inaugurate the new age and promise eschatological life

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 4. The centurion confessed Jesus as God’s Son a pagan, Gentile perceived what the Jewish leaders and nation refused to perceive Jesus as the unique Son of God is seen most clearly in His passion and death

Crucifixion of Jesus (pt 3) Effects of His Crucifixion 4. The centurion confessed Jesus as God’s Son the confession of Jesus as the “Son of God” is the only appropriate, saving response to Jesus
