Study Skills: Academic Goal Setting

Why set academic goals? It is important to set academic goals so that you have something to work toward and stay motivated Knowing what you want to achieve will help keep you on the right path and stay focused Setting goals and monitoring our progress toward them enables us to evaluate how we are doing so that we can change what we are doing in order to get back on the right track

The SMART approach to setting goals S- specific ▫Well-defined M- measurable ▫There is a way to check to see that you have met your goal A- achievable ▫Something that is realistic for you to achieve R- rewarding ▫Something that will make you feel accomplished when you achieve it T- time-bound ▫A set time limit to achieve your goal

Short-term vs Long-term goals A short-term academic goal would include how you would like to perform this quarter or this semester A long-term goal would include how you would like to perform academically by the end of the year or perhaps after 2 or 3 years

Goal setting activity Keep in mind the SMART method (specific, measurable, appropriate, realistic, time-bound) and use the template to set goals for this quarter (short term) and for the end of the school year (long term) Place these goal sheets in your Advisory folder and revisit them when you do your grade checks and assess whether or not you are on the right track

Any Questions?
