Chemical Properties & Physical and Chemical Changes

Physical Properties Property of an object that can be identified by using your 5 senses or making a measurement of that object. ColorDensity TextureMelting Point SmellBoiling Point

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Property of an substance when it reacts with another substance. You must put two substances together to identify their chemical properties Cannot be identified or measures by itself. Flammability Reactivity

FLAMMABILITY: A material’s ability to BURN in the presence of OXYGEN

REACTIVITY: How readily (easily) a substance combines chemically with other substances.

What happens if a property of a substances changes – was it Physical or Chemical?

Physical changes are those changes that do not result in the production of a new substance. If you melt a block of ice, you still have H 2 O at the end of the change.

Examples: break a bottle - you still have glass. painting your nails will not stop them from being fingernails. Cutting a large piece of paper – you just have smaller pieces of paper

Some, but not all, physical changes can be reversed. You could refreeze the water into ice, but you cannot put your hair back together if you don’t like your haircut!

Physical Change? Look for these key words: Dissolve Solubility Melt Freeze Evaporate Cut Inflate Paint Absorb Condense Sublimate

Chemical changes, or chemical reactions, are changes that result in the production of another substance.

When you burn a log in a fireplace, you are carrying out a chemical reaction that releases carbon. When you light your Bunsen burner in lab, you are carrying out a chemical reaction that produces water and carbon dioxide.

Chemical Change? Look for these key words: React Sours Rots Cook/Bake Produces a gas Burns Digest Grows Decomposes Rusts Creates a precipitate (2 clear liquids making a cloudy solution)
