Hunger and Food Insecurity Hunger — “The uneasy or painful sensation caused by a lack of food. The recurrent and involuntary lack of access to food. Hunger may produce malnutrition over time.... Hunger... is a potential, although not necessary, consequence of food insecurity.” Food insecurity — “Limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.”

Nutrition Ed Improves Health 63% of client households report a family member with high blood pressure 33% of client households report someone in the household with diabetes 55% of adults in Santa Clara and 77% in San Mateo are overweight or obese Clients are at greater risk for poor health have fewer resources to manage illness and access healthcare

Nutrition Ed Improves Health 8 Excess Calories High Sodium High Saturated Fat Added Sugar Increased Diabetes Risk Increased Risk of Heart Disease Increased Obesity Risk Poor Growth and Body Function
