OFFICIATING Today’s Game

THE BEST OFFICIALS: 1.Have flawless on-field mechanics 2.Know & understand the rules / spirit of rule 3.Excel at making the proper decisions in high speed, high pressure situations – Able to Make a Call…1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, & 4 th Quarter 4.Know how to interact with coaches/players 5.Prepare for each game at a high level 6.Have a passion to improve and be the best 7.Give honest self evaluations during game reviews – Ability to take constructive criticism

WEEKLY EVALUATION Each game requires grading – Film review…TV, SL, EZ, all 22 – Film Breakdown by Each Crew Member – Crew will conference call to review game (all comments) Mechanics should be graded above all – If we can develop officials to be in the right place at the right time, looking at the right area… They should be able to make the call… every time! – Require each official to submit one play/week where they had improper mechanics  each week

EXAMPLE GRADE SHEET (LOS) 1.What official is looking for immediately after a play? How they prepare for the next play.. down/distance/personnel package/substitutes 2.Huddle breaks, what and how quickly official reads coverages and keys 3.Read formation, and upon shifting and motion, how quickly they’re able to adjust to new keys. 4.Reaction to snap infractions. 5.Snap and where eyes are looking. What are they watching? 6.Position/movement as to what play dictates. 7.How quick official reacts to run/pass/catch/OOB/clock. 8.How official reacts to a foul/continue officiating? 9.Spots. 10.Sideline control / react to coaches/players. 11.Goal line coverages. 12.Reacts to adversity and relates to other officials.

TRAINING Weekly Quizzes: – Timed, Electronic, ability to track question type and % correct… – Should have verbal/visual solution aid. (i.e. the trainer should verbally talk through each solution on conference call/audio file) voice over Training Tapes: Position Tapes and Overall – All must include voice-over (or be highly commented) Pre-Game Evaluation: Build a standard pre-game? – Officials who had teams during previous weeks, during their self- evaluation of film, can mark certain plays to be used for following crew’s pregame? Unique formations? Or can write 3-4 sentences about the teams and what to watch for? Scouting reports Sideline Interaction-Get HC Feedback
