How the Project Started, Fall 2010-January 2011  Ongoing discussion in Special Collections and library about digitizing newspapers  Paper copies of newspapers too fragile to use  Kinesiology classes use of microfilm  Content added to ScholarWorks and CONTENTdm greatly increased its accessibility  Meeting with Brad Arendt from Student Media

Project Preparation, February-June 2011  In-house scanning of microfilm to PDF format  Visibility issues of microfilm  28 reels to digitize with approximately 22, 917 pages  Samples added to ScholarWorks and CONTENTdm to test platforms  Library funding available for project

ScholarWorks OR CONTENTdm?  CONTENTdm Three different format options Relied on Adobe products, or counted against our total item limit  ScholarWorks Easy to navigate to, and around the newspapers Hard to navigate from hit-to-hit.

National and Regional Digitization Standards  Library of Congress National Digital Newspaper Project  BCR CDP Digital Imaging Best Practices Version 2.0

Selecting a Vendor, March-July 2011  Contacted 4 vendors, prices varied from $3,000-$20,000  Decided on local vendor Integra, long history with Albertsons Library and Idaho State Archives  Integra scanned all reels, converted to TIFFs and PDFs, and did full OCR for searching

Preparations for sending microfilm to Integra, August-September 2011  Checked that BSU was copyright holder for all issues of newspapers, current  Received consent from Student Media office to scan newspapers and put them online

Vendor Work on Newspapers, October January 2012  TIFFs and PDFs were placed on portable hard drive and given to Special Collections after scanning  Many pages were unreadable/blurry and some microfilm was returned to Integra for rescanning  Began adding newspapers to ScholarWorks and testing search capabilities  Testing masters of microfilm housed at Idaho State Archives

Adding Newspapers to ScholarWorks, January Febraury 2012  Review each issue to check for page duplication and correct order of pages  Upload 1 issue at a time  Go over student newspapers with Kinesiology students in instruction sessions

Summary of Project  “Bad years” of microfilm, On-campus access only is provided for these years.  Disclaimer on metadata record and cover page of each issue  Searching capabilities in ScholarWorks search box and Google
