British Columbia Section 3 – Economic & cultural changes

Provinces of Canada

British Columbia Victoria Vancouver

A very international city where cultures from all over the world have come together Center of industry Center of transportation Center of commerce Center of culture Home to the 2010 Winter Olympics

The People of the Canadian West The history of this area goes back at least 10,000 years People emigrated from Asia and lived by catching fish, whales, & shellfish Totem poles are common in this area and express symbols of groups, clans, or families

New Arrivals 1700’s - Spanish, French, and Russian explorers showed up to trade 1778 James Cook, a British explorer, met a group of Nootka and they decided to trade Natives wanted iron tools, and the British wanted fur Trading went on peacefully for years Then gold was found in 1858 along the Fraser River

The Gold Rush Victoria was originally created by the British as a town for trade Then in April 1858, 400 men were dropped off on Vancouver Island to mine the area for gold Thousands more kept coming and the area turned into a stumptown Gold was struck in the Cariboo Mountains of eastern British Columbia two years later and people from China, Europe, and the U.S. came running

Changes for the Indigenous People With all of the new people moving onto this land the indigenous people were pushed onto reserves under protest Their language, customs, and religions were forbidden by the government Their children were even taken from them and sent to government run schools Today natives art is thriving and they have won some of their lands back from the government of Canada along with $40 million However, residents of BC voted in 2002 to place limits on native land claims for the future

The Canadian Pacific Railway BC joined the rest of Canada in 1871 Part of the agreement included the building of a transcontinental railroad and it was started in 1881 The line ran from Montreal to Vancouver joining the country Many obstacles like mountains stood in the way but the job got done Workers from Ireland and China came to work on the project

Economics & Culture Even though the railroad connected the country, the mountains still created a barrier with the rest of Canada Many people in B.C. feel more closely tied to the Pacific Rim 40% of all trade is with Asia 15% of the population has Asian ancestry Students even learn Asian languages in their classes B.C. is also linked to the film industry and 3 rd in North America to New York and LA ($800 million & 200 movies in 2002) It is only a two hour plane ride from Hollywood
