La Fiesta de la Cruz en Perú* De Juliana B. *Please note: Other Hispanic countries also celebrate Fiesta de la Cruz or Fiesta de las Cruces.

¿Cuándo? The date of Fiesta de la Cruz changes every year, but is usually celebrated on the first weekend of May.

¿Por qué? The Fiesta de la Cruz in Perú commemorates two things: 1. Ancient Peruvian agro-astronomical rituals, and 2. The Catholic annual calendar.

Ropa especial/Disfraces For Fiesta de la Cruz, Peruvians wear bright colored dresses and costumes to match the colourful crosses.

Alimento There are not many special foods only for Fiesta de la Cruz, but Peruvians usually eat their traditional foods on that day. Some traditional Peruvian foods include: Papa a la Huancaina Anticuchos Lomo Saltado (left photo) Ceviche (right photo)

Actividades Many crosses are decorated with flowers and ribbons for Fiesta de la Cruz, and there are parades held with them. The parades also include dancers as well as musicians. In the past, there were “scissor dancers” that danced on the roofs of churches.

¿Dónde? The Fiesta de la Cruz is celebrated with outdoor parades and dances, mostly taking place in the larger cities of Perú.
