The Zones of Regulation Angie Lopez & Erin Watt

What is it? A social-emotional curriculum used to teach students self-regulation techniques. The lessons and learning activities are designed to help the students recognize when they are in different “zones” and how to use strategies to change or stay in the zone they are in.

The curriculum is taught by Mrs. Lopez during guidance classes. The curriculum is taught by Ms Watt in small social skills and emotional regulation groups. And it is encouraged to be used at the recovery spot in each classroom.

What are the “Zones”?

What strategies are taught?

Monitor your zone!

Strategy Log

How can I apply? Talk about what zone is “expected” in the situations or how a zone may have been “unexpected”. Encourage the “zones language”: “This is making me sad and in the blue zone. I need to talk with my Mom”. Share with the child how his or her behavior is affecting the zone you are in and how you feel. Praise your child frequently for being in the expected zone rather than only pointing out when his or her zone is unexpected. Note: Everyone experiences all of the zones.

Anxiety Found in the “yellow” zone Toward the end of the year, students’ anxiety may increase due to upcoming transitions and testing. Refer to strategies handout.

Benefits? Research indicates an increase in social emotional skills; increased attitude toward self, school, and others; increased social behaviors; decreased conduct problems; decreased emotional distress and increased academic performance. Research indicates an average gain on achievement test scores of 11 to 17 percentile points. Payton, J. W., Weissberg, R.
