WW1 Background info: European countries goal was + land; +land =+ power; therefore, leaders must invade and conquer other lands Germany was competing with Russia and France to expand their armies

Alliances By 1914 all the major powers were linked by a system of alliances. The alliances made it more likely that a war would start. Once started, the alliances made it more likely to spread.

Imperialism All the great powers were competing for colonies / territory. The British feared Germany in Africa. The Austrians feared Serbia / Russia in the Balkans

Black Hand” terrorists attack the Arch Duke Bomb attempt fails in morning Gavrilo Princip shoots Archduke and wife in the afternoon. Austrians blame Serbia for supporting terrorists.

Austrians, supported by Germany, send Serbia a tough ultimatum. Serbia agrees to all but two terms of the ultimatum. Russia mobilises her troops to support Serbia Germany demands that Russia stands her armies down. Germany declares war on Russia

What started WW1? European countries were economic and political rivals with one another. Ethnic conflicts, militarism, and the assassination of Austrian-Hungary Archduke Franz Ferdinand were causes of World War I.

United States enters the war; why? The US became involved after German U- boats sank the Lusitania ship carrying 128 Americans. US also feared Germany was trying to help Mexico invade the southern part of the United States known as the Zimmerman telegram

How does GA benefit/contribute from WW1? Georgia helped win WWI by providing over 100,000 soldiers and many women volunteers. Military camps around the state trained soldiers, pilots, and doctors and later became Forts that are still used today for training. There was also a prison camp that housed captured German soldiers. Cotton grown in Georgia made uniforms and food was sent overseas to the troops. Citizens bought Liberty Bonds and grew Victory Gardens to help.

7. During WW1, Georgia contributed to the war effort by producing which items? A. uniforms B. cigarettes C. food D. all of the above

Analyze each ad 1. What different cultural values are being invoked in each of these posters? 2. Do you think the American gov’t would use similar methods today to “sell” U.S. military involvement overseas- such as Persian Gulf War, Iraq- to the American public? Why or why not?

That propaganda poster, and the others like it, were designed to encourage the American public to help defeat the Germans (Prussians) by investing their money in war bonds, which they called "Liberty Bonds." These bonds are debt securities issued by the American government for the purpose of financing military operations. The creation of this capital not only helped to control inflation during war time, it also gave the public who invested their money in the bonds a feeling of involvement in the war without having to serve in the military. They were available in a wide range of denominations, and thus afforable to most citizens.
