Powers and Exponents Intro to Algebra Farris

 I can write and evaluate expressions using exponents.

Definitions  Exponent -Tells how many times a number is used as a factor.  Power – A number that is expressed using an exponent.  Base – The number that is multiplied.

First Power  When a number or variable is raised to the first power, the exponent is not usually written.  5 1 is written as 5

Of course we HAVE to have music!   Oh Mrs. Farris – WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!!!!!

Let’s Do it!

Order of Operations with Exponents  Step 1 – Simplify the expressions inside grouping symbols first  Step 2 – EVALUATE ALL POWERS  Step 3 – Do all multiplication and division left to right  Step 4 – Do all addition and subtraction left to right

Evaluate Algebraic Expressions x 2 + y 3 if x = 6 and y = -2 (a + b) 3 if a = 5 and b = -2
