Chapter 24 Studying the Sun Almost everything that is known about the universe beyond Earth come by analyzing light from distant sources. Our nearest source of light is the sun. By understanding light and how the sun works, astronomers can better grasp the nature of more distant objects in space.

Electromagnetic Radiation 24.1 The Study of Light  Electromagnetic radiation includes gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet light, visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves, and radio waves.  The electromagnetic spectrum is the arrangement of electromagnetic radiation according to wavelength.  Light travels at a speed of 300,000 km (186,411 miles) per second. In a 24 hour period any of these waves can travel up to 26 billion km (16,155,651,000 miles)!

Electromagnetic Radiation 24.1 The Study of Light  Nature of Light In some instances light behaves like waves, and in others, like particles. In the wave sense, light can be thought of as swells in the ocean. This motion is characterized by a property known as wavelength, which is the distance from one wave crest to the next.  Photons A photon is a small packet of light energy. Wave theory cannot explain some effects of light. In these cases, light acts as a photon.

Spectroscopy 24.1 The Study of Light An emission spectrum is a series of bright lines of particular wavelengths produced by a hot gas under low pressure.  Emission Spectrum When the spectrum of a star is studied, the spectral lines act as “fingerprints.” These lines identify the elements present and thus the star’s chemical composition.

Formation of Spectra A continuous spectrum consists of a band of uninterrupted color. An absorption spectrum contains dark lines. An emission spectrum contains bright lines.

The Doppler Effect 24.1 The Study of Light  The Doppler effect is the apparent change in frequency of electromagnetic or sound waves caused by the relative motions of the source and the observer.  In astronomy, the Doppler effect is used to determine whether a star or other body in space is moving away from or toward Earth.

The Doppler Effect 24.1 The Study of Light  Objects moving away from an object emit red light (long wavelength).  Objects moving toward an object emit blue light (short wavelength).

The Doppler Effect The wavelength of the sound of an approaching ambulance is compressed as it approaches an observer. For a receding ambulance, the wavelength is stretched out and the observer notes a lower-pitched sound. When this effect is applied to light, a shorter wavelength is noted for an approaching object and is seen as blue light. A longer wavelength is noted for a receding object, which is seen as red light.
