Michelangelo By James Beauchaine Michelangelo

Background Michelangelo’s artistic talent was discovered at age 13. –His talent was discovered at Lorenzo de’Medici’s original school of art. –His teacher was Bertoldo di Giovanni Michelangelo was invited into the Medici’s home where he could be shaped into a fine artist.

Occupation Michelangelo was an Italian painter, sculptor, poet, engineer, and architect. He worked in Florence and Rome His biggest rival was Leonardo da Vinci. By the time of his death, he had become one of the wealthiest men in Italy.

Sculptures His masterpiece, David, is located outside the Palazzo Vecchio. –He used just three chisels to sculpt it. –It took him two and a half years. –He rarely ate and didn’t change his boots while sculpting David. Eventually the leather fell off his boots, along with layers of dead skin. Michelangelo created two huge marble tombs, demanded by the Pope, for his father and brother. He tried to destroy his last work, the Pieta, because he was so frustrated with his former student, Giorgio Vasari, who was working for the despised monarch Cosimo I.

Sculptures continued He sculpted a picture of Saint John the Baptist. –Made it in Florence. He made three small sculptures for the Shrine of San Domenico. –Made it in Bologna. He created a cupid sculpture that was sold by an antique dealer. –This angered Michelangelo very much.

Paintings He painted the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. –It took him four years. –It had 300 figures and stories that were all from the Bible. In 1534, the Medici Pope asked Michelangelo to come back to the Sistine Chapel and paint another picture. He painted what is called “The Last Judgment” across the altar. –The painting was full of terror and pain. –The Pope and Michelangelo were no longer friends.
