MYP Science

What is MYP Science? MYP = Middle Years Program Science = you will have integrated science which means you will learn about biology, physics, and chemistry during the course of the year.

What will you need for class Notebooks, textbook & planner Pencil and blue/black pen Coloured pencils Ruler Glue stick/tape Coloured highlighters Your brain…. Right attitude and a thirst for knowledge

What will we do in class? Exercises from textbooks Class activities Lab Experiments Lab Write-ups Tests Written work Puzzles and some games

How will you be graded?? Assessment (page 15 of planner) In MYP you will have six criteria: One world, Communication in science, Knowledge and understands of science, Scientific inquiry, Processing Data, and Attitudes in Science. Assessments can take the form of lab reports, written essays/assignments, projects, or unit/section tests.

One World ~ Criteria A This objective refers to enabling students to understand the interdependence between science and society. Students should be aware of the global dimension of science, as a universal activity with consequences for our lives and subject to social, economic, political, environmental, cultural and ethical factors.

Communication in Science ~ Criteria B This objective refers to enabling students to develop their communication skills in science. Students should be able to understand scientific information, such as data, ideas, arguments and investigations, and communicate it using appropriate scientific language in a variety of communication modes and formats.

Knowledge and understanding of science ~ Criteria C This objective refers to enabling students to understand the main ideas and concepts of science and to apply them to solve problems in familiar and UNFAMILIAR situations. Students are expected to develop critical and reflective thinking and judge the credibility of scientific information when this is presented to them.

Scientific Enquiry ~ Criteria D This objective refers to enabling students to develop scientific inquiry skills and to carry out scientific investigations.

Processing data ~ Criteria E This objective refers to enabling students to record, organize and process data. Students should. Be able to collect and transform data by numerical calculations to diagrammatic form. Student should be able to analyze and interpret data and explain appropriate conclusions.

Attitudes in science ~ Criteria F This objective goes beyond science and refers to encouraging attitude and dispositions that will contribute to student’s development as caring and responsible individual and member so society.

What does my grade look like? There are 6 criteria Each criteria is valued out of 6 points/levels Total Grade is then calculated out of 36 Grade Boundaries… Final MYP Grade is out of 1-7

What topics will be covered? Grade 6: Scientific Method, Biology (Life), Chemistry (Matter), Physics (Energy), Physics (Forces)
