Vocabulary Addition and subtraction are inverse operations; they undo each other. An equation is two expressions that are equal (the same on both sides)

Solving Equations When we solve an equation, we want to isolate the variable. We want the variable to be on one side of the equation all alone. To keep our equation balanced, whatever we do to one side of an equation, we have to do the same exact thing to the other side.

Example One: Keep it Balanced! x - 6 = - 3 Step 1- Draw a line Step 2- Label your sides Step 3- Sort and Balance. ( Think about what is happening to the variable now and how can you undo it.) Step 4 – Simplify! Step 5 - Check your answer by plugging the answer into your original equation. Does your answer make sense?
