Adding rational numbers Essential question: How can you add rational numbers? Unit 1-2.
ADDING AND SUBTRACTING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INTEGERS.
NO CALCULATORS!!!!!!!.  Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites (no decimal values!)  Example: -3 is an integer  Example: 4 is an integer.
ADDING INTEGERS Positive + Positive = Positive Positive + Positive = Positive ( +3) + (+2) = +5 ( +3) + (+2) = +5 When a number is positive, you do not.
Adding and Subtracting Integers To add integers with the same sign, add their absolute values and then change the sign to the sign of the addends. Positive.

Adding Integers

We work DOWN, not across.

Additive Inverse any 2 numbers whose sum is zero opposites are additive inverses

What is a sum? the answer to an addition problem sum

The additive inverse of…… 4 is … 9 is … -61 is … -367 is … is … 7 / 9

Adding Numbers with the Same Sign Add the numbers and keep the sign. Ex. 1) Ex. 2) (-62) + (-13)

Adding Numbers with Different Signs To add numbers with different signs, simply find the difference between the numbers and use the sign of the number further from 0 (the difference is the answer to a subtraction problem)

Adding with Different Signs Ex. 3) 6 + (-4) zero pairs

Adding with Different Signs (-14) 14 –

Practice (Same signs—add & keep)

More Practice **Different signs

Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract. Keep the sign of the further number, then you’ll be exact. (to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
