Let’s recap What are scales? What directions do they go? What types of scale are there? What do we use them for?

What are modes? A mode is a type of scale that often occurs in folk music and jazz. What are the most common modes?

Dorian mode: D E F G A B C (all the white notes from D to D)

Aeolian Mode A B C D E F G (all the white notes from A to A)

As they’re both all white notes, are they the same? What are the intervals between each note? TTTTTSS

What about the Aeolian mode? TSTTTTS Dorian mode is: TSTTTST Aeolian mode is: TSTTSTT

Listening One of the pieces that we will be studying next half term is called ‘All Blues’ by Miles Davis. It uses the Dorian mode. Listen to it now and see if you can follow the score.
