Developing resilience in Scotland for people living with dementia, their families and carers

“The keystone of high achievement and happiness is exercising your strengths, rather than focusing on weaknesses” Seligman (2001)

8 Pillar Model of Community Support The 8 Pillars Model builds the resilience of people with dementia and their carers to enable them to live in the community for as long as possible Each factor of the illness influences every other factor, and impacts on the overall health and wellbeing of the individual and their carer Excess disability is created when people with dementia do not receive appropriate care and treatment for the symptoms of the illness

8 Pillar Model of Community Support

Provide care and support Set high, but realistic, expectations for success Provide opportunities for ‘meaningful contribution’ to others Increase positive bonds and connections Set and maintain clear boundaries Develop needed life skills

“Support to maintain and develop social networks and to benefit from peer support for both the person with dementia and the carer” Community Connections

Dementia cafes Music and dancing group Sports reminiscence group Singing groups Themed reminiscence sessions Carers support group Sons and daughters’ support group Knitting sessions Art group ?
