The Drug Development Process In the US what agency is responsible for approving a new drug? What are the stages of drug development? Match the clinical trial to phase: I, II, III, IV A.large number of subjects (~ ) – establishes safety and dosage – small number of subjects (~10-100) – study conducted after the drug has been licensed and marketed to determine optimal use – larger number of subjects (~ ) – evaluates effectiveness and short-term side effects – controlled trial where the drug is tested against standard treatment

New York Times Article What was the name of the drug? What was the average life expectancy after a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma? What is meant by a targeted drug? What % of melanoma patients have the genetic mutation targeted by the drug? Why did the drug not work in the original formulation? Why was Dr Flaherty reluctant to enroll Mr Nelson in the trial?
