Ferrol is a city in the province of A Coruña, Galicia.

The municipality of Ferrol is situated in the north of the province of La Coruña, in Galicia. It is an area that lives mainly on activities related to shipping, through the fishing and commercial port, the shipyard, various facilities belonging to the Navy or the tourist beaches. The shipyard, founded during the reign of Felipe V, has been the economic engine of Ferrol and its region for many years. It is currently a sector in crisis, but it keeps on being the one with the greatest industrial capacity (heavy industry) in Galicia. The newly finished outer port and the naval base of the Spanish Navy (Arsenal, Military Hospital and others) are, as they have always been, of great importance for the economy of Ferrol and its region. Beaches The Best of Ferrol is in its surroundings. Within a radius of 30 km there is much to see. First, heading to Coruña, one should not miss Pontedeume. This medieval town is well worth a stop. It has a stone bridge (hence the name), which has been for many years the longest in Galicia, the only thing that connected the north coast of Galicia. Near the monastery of Monfero,there is also that of Caaveiro (pictured below) and The Eume fragas, a natural area with a lot of hiking trails. But the main attration lies to the north. Ten km from Ferrol we find a group of amazing beaches. If it were not for its cold water and its tides, Bravia would be the best beach in Spain. But there are also other beaches, such as Doniños, San Jorge, The Fragata and Santa Comba, all of them being really spectacular untapped, fine white sand beaches.

Ferrol City The 81.9 km2 area of the municipality provides a constant succession of contrasts: a medieval layout with narrow streets and modernist houses with stunning galleries; military constructions and open ocean beaches between two fortified castles (Castillo de San Felipe and Castillo de la Palma) that dominate the estuary.

The Castles in Ferrol The castle of San Felipe has been one of the most important strengths of the Estuary ( ría) of Ferrol. It was built in the sixteenth century; It is located opposite another castle, the castle of La Palma.

Santiago de Compostela It is situated 73 km from Ferrol. It is the capital city of Galicia and both the Galician government and parliament are headquartered here. Its old town has been a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since It stands out as an important center of Christian pilgrimage, along with Jerusalem and Rome, since the Apostle St James is said to be buried in its cathedral.

The Tower of Hercules in A Coruña 54 km from Ferrol, there is another monument to highlight: the Tower of Hercules, which is a lighthouse located on the peninsula of the city of La Coruña. Its total height is 68 m and it dates back to the first century. It has the privilege of being the only Roman lighthouse and the oldest in the world which still works. It is the second lighthouse in height in Spain, just behind the Faro de Chipiona. On June 27, 2009 it was declared a World Heritage Site.

The “Camino de Santiago” ( St James’s way) is a route that pilgrims from Spain and from all Europe make to arrive in the city of Santiago de Compostela, where the apostle James's remains are venerated by millions of Catholics. St James’s way has been declared World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Our city has not escaped from the travelling movement involved and Ferrol's port is and has been a place of reference for the landing of the navigators bound for Santiago de Compostela. Gastronomy Broth of pork with ‘grelos’. It is par excellence the typical Galician food during the cold months, from to first of November, to Shrove Tuesday. Galician stew: ham together with delicious Galician veal, hen and sausage, with grelos or cabbage, potatoes and chickpeas.

Galician ‘empanada’. The basic ingredients within this pie are saffron, oil, pepper and abundant onion and these ingredients are combined either with meat, tuna, scallops or other types of seafood. One of the characteristics of the Galician ‘empanada’ is the softness, lightness and fineness of its dough, and the taste of its seafood Fish. They are fished at the estuaries or in the neighborhood of the coast: Hake, flounder, bass, grouper, sole fish... You can taste them at the many inns and restaurants that you will find in Ferrol.

Seafood: It is Galicia’s big treasure. Octopus: A delicious Galician speciality.

Typical desserts: Cottage cheeses, Galician crepes ( ‘filloas’), Santiago’s pie ( made of almonds) We must also mention some fine wines that can be tasted in Ferrol

Galician traditional music Galicia has a very rich folk heritage. The most representative Galician music is the ‘Muiñeira’. The best-known Galician instruments are the bagpipe, the tamborine, the flute and the drum.

The most representative Galician folk musicians are Carlos Nuñez, Cristina Pato, Luar na Lubre, Berrogüetto and Milladoiro.
