The PSAT The PSAT is a test usually taken in October by high school students in their junior year. High School students take this test as a qualification for the National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship is given to the student with the highest score on the PSAT. This test can help you practice for the SAT in your future.

Test Structure The PSAT contains five sections: a. two 25-minute critical reading sections. b. one 30-minute writing skills section c. two 25-minute math sections. This whole test requires 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Critical Reading The critical reading section contains 13 sentence completion, two 25-minute critical reading sections which has 48 questions, and 35 critical reading questions.

Writing Skills The writing skills section contains 14 identifying sentence errors, 5 improving paragraph questions, 20 improving sentences, and one 30- minute writing section which has 30 questions.

Test Taking Strategies Read the question before looking at the choices. Eliminate choices that you know aren’t correct. Read all of the choices before choosing your answer. Do NOT start changing your answer; usually your first answer is the correct one. Most of the time the correct answer is the one with the most information included. If you understand that a question has three possible answers, chose “all of the above”.

Test Taking Strategies A positive answer is possibly the correct one. Skip the questions you have trouble with, then go back after you finish. Manage you time wisely. Enter the test with a positive attitude.
