What is LEED?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design It was created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998

What does LEED cover? LEED consists of seven categories of ratings, including New Construction (NC), Existing Buildings (EB); Schools, Healthcare & Retail; and Core and Shell. Each category has a series of requirements that are met by completing online templates on the GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute) website.

What does LEED do? LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. ▫From the US Green Building Council

How many LEED rating systems?

What version of LEED?

How are LEED points awarded? LEED points are awarded on a 100-point scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts. Additionally, 10 bonus credits are available, four of which address regionally specific environmental issues. A project must satisfy all prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points to be certified.

LEED Points & Certifications USGBC LEED 2009 (v3) In LEED 2009 there are 100 possible base points plus an additional 6 points for Innovation in Design and 4 points for Regional Priority. Buildings can qualify for four levels of certification: Certified points Silver points Gold points Platinum - 80 points and above

How are LEED points earned? LEED points are earned in seven categories: Sustainable sites Water efficiency Energy and atmosphere Materials and resources Indoor environmental quality Innovation and design process Regional priority

Show your LEED knowledge! Never refer to it as “LEEDs” Use the designation LEED 2009 (v3) in correspondence Always designate the particular type of certification under discussion—usually NC, or new construction. LEED NC 2009 (v3)

Show your LEED knowledge! Most of all, remember that Precast is a contributor only to LEED points. Precast, by itself, does NOT provide LEED points to any project. So, the proper phrasing is… Precast can contribute to achieving as many as 20 LEED points

LEED Materials & Resources Credits Materials and Resources 14 Possible Points Prerequisite 1: Storage and Collection of Recyclables Credit 1.1: Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Walls, Floors and Roof Credit 1.2: Building Reuse—Maintain Existing Interior Nonstructural Elements Credit 2: Construction Waste Management Credit 3: Materials Reuse Credit 4: Recycled Content Credit 5: Regional Materials Credit 6: Rapidly Renewable Materials Credit 7: Certified Wood

MR Credit 4: Recycled Content 1–2 Points Intent ▫To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

MR Credit 4: Recycled Content Requirements Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of postconsumer recycled content plus 1/2 of the preconsumer content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total value of the materials in the project.

MR Credit 4: Recycled Content The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows: Recycled Content Points ▫10% 1 point ▫20% 2 point The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of the assembly to determine the recycled content value.

MR Credit 5: Regional Materials 1–2 Points Intent To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

MR Credit 5: Regional Materials Requirements Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20%, based on cost, of the total materials value. If only a fraction of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) can contribute to the regional value. The minimum percentage regional materials for each point threshold is as follows: Regional Materials Points ▫10% 1 ▫20% 2
