Will Various Soil Temperatures Affect the Growth of Barley? By the CRED (Caleigh, Rory, Emily, and Daniel)

Our Hypothesis We think that the seed planted in the heated soil will make the seed germinate faster. The cold soil will slow down the process of the seed's germination because it is not near the normal temperature barley is grown in.

Our Design Process Step One: Get supplies (soil, Styrofoam cups, and barley seeds) Step Two: Place 250ml soil into each of nine cups Step Three: Take three cups with soil inside and expose it to 2 Degrees Celsius temperature for about 8 hours. This will be Experimental Group A Step Four: Take three cups with soil inside and expose to 100 Degrees Fahrenheit for about 8 hours. This will be Experimental Group B Step Five: Take three cups with soil inside and expose to room temperature, for about 8 hours. This is the Control Group. Step Six: After about 8 hours is over, take Experimental Group A and insert four barely seeds per cup Step Seven: After about 8 hours is over, take Experimental Group B and insert four barely seeds per cup Step Eight: After about 8 hours is over, take Control Group and insert four barley seeds per cup Step Nine: Add 20ml of water to each cup Step Ten: Place Experimental Group A back into 2 degrees Celsius for three hours. Step Eleven: Place Experimental Group B back into 100 degrees Fahrenheit for three hours Step Twelve: Place Control Group back into room temperature for three hours. Step Thirteen: After the three hours is over, place all cups in room temperature Step Fourteen: Every day, water plants with 20ml of water. Also, observe plants and wait until they sprout Step Fifteen: Make a conclusion after plants have grown.

What We Did We watched and observed each seed grow for a total of 18 days. We recorded each seed’s height and occurrences throughout the experiment We watered each plant with 20ml of water every day

Total Heights The total heights of the seeds in the controlled group were 30.5cm, 23cm, 6cm, 21cm, and 14.5cm. The total heights of the seeds in the cold group (Experimental Group A) were 19.5cm and 6cm. The total heights of the seeds in the warm group (Experimental Group B) were 10cm, 24cm, 25.5cm, and 24.5cm

Our Hypothesis Was Correct!

Research Conclusion From our 18-day experiment, we can conclude that our hypothesis was correct. The warm group grew so much faster and taller than the cold group. A total of 4 seeds grew in the warm group while only 2 grew in the cold. The warm group’s heights were 10cm, 24cm, 25.5cm, and 24.5cm while the cold group were 19.5cm and 6cm. We thought that the heated soil would make a difference, and it proved to do so! Our controlled group seeds grew the most out of all the seeds. Their heights were 30.5cm, 23cm, 6cm, 21cm, and 14.5cm. We have come to understand that barley plants grow the best in its regular temperature.

The End!
