Epic Poem Revolves around a hero and his/her quest. (Are there any epic poems in my room?) Covers a vast area. (The hero is on an adventure.) Action centers around the hero’s great deeds during his or her adventures.

Lyric Poem Expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. Doesn’t tell a story. Presents the poets thoughts and feelings directly to the reader. Ex. Dying (aka I heard a fly buzz when I died ) by Emily Dickinson I heard a fly buzz when I died; The stillness round my form Was like the stillness in the air Between the heaves of storm

Ballad A ballad is a story in poetic form. A ballad tells a story similar to a folk tale or a legend. Some ballads are in the form of a song. Does anyone have any songs that are ballads?

Ode Long poems. Very serious in nature. Have a set structure. Usually addresses a particular subject. Usually meant to be sung.

Sonnet 14 lines long. 3 quatrains with an ending couplet. Iambic Pentameter Shakespeare has many sonnets. Sonnet 18 By: William Shakespeare Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed, And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st, Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st, So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Concrete poems The form of these poems is where the poet expresses themselves. The poet expresses his or her feelings through the poems visual structure as well as the words in the poem. m m

Haiku Japanese poem 3 unryhmed lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Usually reflects on some aspect of nature and creates images. Zombie Haiku by Ryan Mecum Biting into heads is much harder than it looks. The skull is feisty

Limerick 5 lines. Usually humorous. Lines 1, 2, and 5 of a Limerick have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.

Write a Bio Poem A Bio-Poem consist of the following elements: Your first name. 4 adjectives that describe you. Sibling of....(or son/daughter of...) Lover of....(three things, people or ideas) Who feels...(up to three items) Who needs...(up to three items) Who fears...(up to three items) Who would like to see...(up to three people, ideas or places) Am a resident of...(city, state)

Blank Verse Poetry written in unryhmed Iambic Pentameter. Iambic Pentameter= five iambs per line. Resembles ordinary speech. Shakespeare uses blank verse in most of his plays. An example would be Romeo’s famous, “What light through yonder window breaks,” speech from the play.

Free Verse There is no real pattern to free verse. It can rhyme or not. Free verse was created to break away from the rigid guidelines of poetry. Walt Whitman has many examples of free verse in his poetry.
