GOES-R Product Distribution Logistics Before and After Handover Kathryn Miretzky GOES-R User Services Coordinator Product Readiness and Operations (PRO) NOAA Satellite Proving Ground/ User Readiness Meeting May 9, 2016

Agenda L1b vs L2+ products Data access Data distribution before and after Handover GOES Rebroadcast (GRB) and Product Distribution and Access (PDA) in depth Contingency ground segment operations

What Is Handover? Operations and Products Handover occurs 6 months after GOES-R launch Before Handover, the GOES-R program maintains control of the satellite. After Handover, OSPO takes control of the satellite.

Baseline Products Level 1b Level 2+

GOES-R Data Access AcronymSystem NameDescription GRBGOES RebroadcastOne channel of the space data relay service of GOES-R for Level 1b data products (ABI L1b, Space Weather L1b, and GLM L2). These data are available to all users with GRB receivers in view of a GOES-R series satellite at the East or West operational longitudes. AWIPSAdvanced Weather Interactive Processing System Interactive computer system that integrates meteorological and hydrological data, enabling forecasters to prepare forecasts and issue warnings. GOES-R will provide selected products through AWIPS. Sectorized Cloud and Moisture Imagery will be delivered via NOAAPORT/SBN (Satellite Broadcast Network). HRIT/ EMWIN High Rate Information Transmission/ Emergency Managers Weather Information Network EMWIN is a direct service that provides users with weather forecasts, warnings, graphics and other information directly from the NWS in near real-time. The HRIT service is a new high data rate (400 Kpbs) version of today’s LRIT (Low Rate Information Transmission), broadcasting GOES-R satellite imagery and selected products to remotely-located user terminals. PDAProduct Distribution and Access The Environmental Satellite Processing and Distribution System (ESPDS) is responsible for receiving and storing real-time environmental satellite data and products and making them available to authorized users (ABI L1b and L2+, Space Weather L1b, and GLM L2). PDA will provide real-time distribution and access services for GOES-R users. CLASSComprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System Web-based data archive and distribution system for NOAA’s environmental data. CLASS will provide retrospective data access and distribution services of GOES-R data to all users.

Data Distribution Before Handover Once each instrument reaches Beta Maturity, data from that instrument will populate the GRB stream and thus all downstream users including PDA NWS determines when to release data to WFOs

How will you get data before and after Handover? 1. Raw data packets downlinked to WCDAS At WCDAS, geometric and radiometric data added to L0 which processes L0 to L1b. Also, SCMI created and GLM L2. 2a. ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 uplinked to GOES-R via GRB. AWIPS Network Control Facility (NCF) in Silver Spring, MD WCDAS in Wallops, VA 2b. SCMI (L2) sent to NCF through terrestrial line. 5. SCMI (L2) and some L2+ products sent to Master Ground Station via terrestrial line. Master Ground Station in Hauppauge, NY NSOF in Suitland, MD 3. ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 downlinked via GRB to NSOF or downlinked via GRB to NCEP Centers and Direct Readout Users. NCEP Centers and Direct Readout Users PDA Subscribers 6. SCMI (L2) and some L2+ products uplinked to a communications satellite. 7b. SCMI (L2) and L2+ products sent over SBN to external users. NOAAPort Users 7a. SCMI (L2) and L2+ sent over SBN (o WFOs and RFCs Weather Forecast Offices and River Forecast Centers AWIPS Data Delivery will pull L2+ products from PDA at NSOF and send to each WFO/RFC on an ad- hoc and supplemental basis. SES-1 communication satellite Radiofrequency Transmission 4. L2+ products generated at NSOF and sent via PDA either to subscribers or to NCF for NWS distribution. PDA also distributes ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 products Terrestrial Line

GRB 1. WCDAS in Wallops, VA NSOF in Suitland, MD 3. ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 downlinked via GRB to NSOF or downlinked via GRB to NCEP Centers and Direct Readout Users. GRB users include all NCEP centers and direct readout users (i.e. anyone with a GRB antenna) Data via GRB is ABI L1b, Space Weather L1b, GLM L2 NSOF receives GRB and generates the rest of the baseline (Level 2) products NCEP Centers and Direct Readout Users 2b. SCMI (L2) sent to NCF through terrestrial line. AWIPS Network Control Facility (NCF) in Silver Spring, MD

PDA 5. SCMI (L2) and some L2+ products sent to Master Ground Station via terrestrial line. Master Ground Station in Hauppauge, NY NSOF in Suitland, MD NOAAPort Users Radiofrequency Transmission Terrestrial Line PDA users include anyone with a subscription. PDA distributes all baseline products (ABI L1b, ABI L2+, Space Weather L1b, GLM L2). What you receive depends on your subscription. 4. L2+ products generated at NSOF and sent via PDA either to subscribers or to NCF for NWS distribution. PDA also distributes ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 products AWIPS Network Control Facility (NCF) in Silver Spring, MD 7b. SCMI (L2) and L2+ products sent over SBN to external users. 7a. SCMI (L2) and L2+ sent over SBN (o WFOs and RFCs SES-1 communication satellite PDA Subscribers Weather Forecast Offices and River Forecast Centers AWIPS Data Delivery will pull L2+ products from PDA at NSOF and send to each WFO/RFC on an ad- hoc and supplemental basis. 6. SCMI (L2) and some L2+ products uplinked to a communications satellite.

PDA Continued There is NO backup for PDA if NSOF fails HRIT/EMWIN rebroadcasts some data from PDA (exact products have not been finalized) CLASS is populated with data from PDA

Contingency Operations – WCDAS Failure 1. Raw data packets downlinked to CBU. 2a. ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 uplinked to GOES-R via GRB. 2b. SCMI (L2) sent to NCF through terrestrial line. 5. ABI L1b, Space Wx L1b, and GLM L2 downlinked via GRB to NSOF or downlinked via GRB to NCEP Centers and Direct Readout Users. NOAAPort Users Radiofrequency Transmission Terrestrial Line 4. 7a.
