TO DISCUSS THE NSPI SAFE CLEARANCE REPORT PROCESS. TO DISCUSS SOME OF THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH WORK AROUND OUR SYSTEMS NOT TO GIVE WORKERS THE ABILITY TO MOVE CLOSER THAN THE LIMITS PRESCRIBED BY LAW (6 METERS) INFORMATION SESSION –REFER TO REGULATIONS/SAFE WORK PROCEDURES NOTE: THIS SESSION IS NOT INTENDED TO QUALIFY AS TRAINING IN ANY AND ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO THE OCCUPATIONAL GENERAL SAFETY REGULATIONS 3 Session Objectives

4 Why is this session important? ……

5 ……… For Your Safety!

Electrical Contacts NSP IS REQUIRED TO TRACK AND REPORT ALL CONTACTS THAT WE RESPOND TO: PRIMARY CONTACTS – 14 SECONDARY CONTACTS – 86

NS Regulations 7 OVERHEAD POWER LINES SECTION 126 OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY GENERAL REGULATIONS REQUIRES PEOPLE TO CONTACT THE POWER AUTHORITY IF THEY WILL BE ENCROACHING ON THE OVERHEAD PLANT WHILE CONDUCTING WORK(6M).

v Contact

UNDERGROUND POWER LINES 153 (1) WHERE THE LOCATION OF ANY UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL, GAS OR OTHER UTILITY LINE OR PIPING IS LIKELY TO ENDANGER A PERSON AT A WORKPLACE, AN EMPLOYER SHALL ENSURE THAT BEFORE BEGINNING AN EXCAVATION OR TRENCH THE UTILITY THAT OWNS OR OPERATES THE UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL, GAS OR OTHER UTILITY LINE OR PIPE IS CONTACTED IN ORDER TO HAVE THE UTILITY CLEARLY LOCATE AND MARK THE UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL, GAS OR OTHER UTILITY LINE. 9 NS Regulations

v Duct Bank Contact

WHAT IS A NSPI SAFE CLEARANCE REPORT? A NSPI SAFE CLEARANCE REPORT IS A DETAILED REPORT IDENTIFYING ANY POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUES/HAZARDS TO THE REQUESTING PARTY WHO IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE WORK IN CLOSE PROXIMITY OF NSPI PLANT (PROPERTY OR EQUIPMENT). A COPY OF THIS REPORT IS PROVIDED TO THE REQUESTOR. 11 Safe Clearance Report

12 Safe Clearance Report

13 Safe Clearance Report

ALWAYS MAINTAIN 6 METRES (20 FEET) CLEARANCE FROM OVERHEAD POWER LINES, UNLESS YOU HAVE A SAFE CLEARANCE REPORT SIGNED BY AN AUTHORIZED NOVA SCOTIA POWER REPRESENTATIVE. IT CAN BE HARD TO TELL WHICH LINES ARE POWER, TELEPHONE OR CABLE TV. AVOID TAKING CHANCES AND KEEP CLEAR OF ALL WIRES BY AT LEAST 6 METRES (20 FEET). BE AWARE THAT UNDERGROUND POWER LINES AND OTHER UTILITIES MAY BE PRESENT. CALL ( IN METRO) BEFORE YOU DIG OR IF YOU ARE GOING TO WORK AROUND OVERHEAD POWER LINES. 14 Know What To Do

STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE AND CALL FOR HELP(911). YOU ARE SAFE FROM ELECTROCUTION AS LONG AS YOU STAY PUT. KEEP CO-WORKERS AND THE PUBLIC AWAY FROM YOUR VEHICLE. IF YOU MUST EXIT THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES JUMP CLEAR WITH BOTH FEET TOGETHER, NOT TOUCHING ANY OTHER PART OF THE VEHICLE. SHUFFLE WITH BOTH FEET TOGETHER AWAY FROM THE SCENE, UNTIL YOU ARE AT LEAST 20 METRES AWAY. DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE BEFORE HAVING IT THOROUGHLY INSPECTED BY A COMPETENT SERVICE PROVIDER! 15 Emergency Procedures for Vehicle Contacts

16 TIRES ARE NOT INSULATORS HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL CONTACT MAY CAUSE SEVERE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL BURNING OF THE RUBBER. THE TIRE COULD FAIL IMMEDIATELY, ONE HOUR LATER OR AFTER SEVERAL DAYS, DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF DAMAGE DONE. ALLOW TIRES TO COOL FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR BEFORE INSPECTION BY A QUALIFIED TIRE FACILITY. INSPECT THE VEHICLE’S HYDRAULIC & COMPUTER EQUIPMENT., ETC
