Ephesians 2:1-22 BEING ALIVE IN CHRIST

 New Year Resolutions  What is your new year resolution?  Resolution – made a decision to do something…  How about actually doing it?  Rather than a resolution, how about a goal?  A goal has a sense of action!  Something to aim and achieve  Perhaps in 2016, it’s more than just hearing the word of God, but be doers of the word of God HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016

 The bible should not just be for your DEVOTIONAL, but rather be DIRECTIONAL for your life!  We’re not just exercising our mind & heart = devotion, but also our body & spirit = direction.  Psalms 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  You are “going places” in 2016, better get directions from God! IN 2016…

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. EPHESIANS 2:1-22 (NIV)

6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. EPHESIANS 2:1-22 (NIV)

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. EPHESIANS 2:1-22 (NIV)

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. EPHESIANS 2:1-22 (NIV)

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. EPHESIANS 2:1-22 (NIV)

 “To the praise of HIS glory.” from Ephesians 1  Geoff used the phrase “your kids are a credit to you.” to explain bringing glory to God.  We, the children of God, the church, are a credit to God – for HIS glory! LAST WEEK GEOFF FRANCIS SPOKE ON…

 Have you seen the Feast of Tents?  Often known as the feast of booths or tabernacle… INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

THE WHOLE OF LIFE CAN BE DESCRIBED AS: FROM GOD, TO GOD & IN THE YEARS BETWEEN – A TENT

 Is usually part of the explanation or basis of Baptism (v.1-3)  It emphasise being set apart for God (v.4-7)  And to be in God’s service, in a world confused and estranged from its Creator (v.8-10) THIS PASSAGE – EPHESIANS 2

 That should get your attention!  Paul uses the personal pronoun – YOU!  He is talking directly at you!  The bible is talking to you!  God is speaking to you!  The passage challenge you – EXPERITIALLY  You need to experience God for yourself YOU ARE DEAD.

 Israel has a history, Jesus has a history, the church has a history.  To be a Christ follower is to enter into that history, to say we were in Egypt, we were in Nazareth, we were in Jerusalem, Rome, etc.  But the primary historical location of the believer, according to Ephesians 2, is Jesus Christ.  The text does not use the usual Pauline phrase "in Christ Jesus," but "with Christ Jesus." THERE IS HISTORY.

 The historical references to him are brief but sufficient: he was crucified, he died, he was buried, he was raised, he was enthroned.  To be a Christ follower, says the passage, is to be crucified with Jesus, to die with him, to be buried with him, to he raised with him, to be enthroned with him. THERE IS HISTORY.

 Two Greek words:  Ta or Panta = the totality  What is here, what is below and what is above.  Peripatew = commonly known as “following”; a better translation is “transfer”  See v WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ALIVE?

 Our lives is more than that “dash” that separate when we were born to when we die  E.g. C.S. Lewis lived 29 Nov Nov 1963 (age 64)  We are part of something bigger than just a “dash”  Our life extends from "the foundation of the world," that which "God prepared beforehand," to "the ages to come."  Faith says there is a metanarrative, a story within which our stories make sense.  In other words, "from God, to God."
