Definition of gender discrimination Gender discrimination, also known as sexual discrimination, is the practice of letting a person's sex unfairly become a factor when deciding who receives a job, promotion, or other employment benefit.

Main categories of gender discrimination in business world Sexual harassment Pregnancy based discrimination

Sexual harassment This form of discrimination involves inappropriate words or actions of a sexual nature directed at an employee by employers of the opposite sex. To meet the criteria for harassment, the behavior in question must be both unwanted and sexual in nature.

Pregnancy based discrimination An employer refuses to hire a pregnant woman because of her pregnancy, because of a pregnancy-related condition or because of the prejudices of co-workers, clients, or customers.

Steps taken by employers to end gender discrimination To adopt a zero tolerance policy towards all acts of discrimination To implement and enforce the new policy by creating disciplinary standards for violations of the policy To conduct a thorough investigation every time a claim of discrimination or harassment is lodged
