Solving Compound Inequalities Section 1-6

“and” Compound Inequalities Graph the following inequalities on a number line. What do you notice about how their graphs interact?

 Compound inequality: consists of two inequalities joined by the word “and” or the word “or”  When we have a compound inequality that contains the word “and” then the graph is the intersection of the two inequalities  So “and”=intersection Important Vocabulary:

I Do We can solve these compound inequalities two ways: separately or together. Since they are already together, lets just solve it that way.

“or” Compound Inequalities Graph the following inequalities on a number line. What do you notice about how their graphs interact?

“or” union  The graph of a compound inequality containing “or” is the union of the solution sets of the two inequalities  For these types of problems we will have to solve each inequality separately Now let’s talk about “or”
