Early life Born in Cairo, Egypt to a architect and his wife. It was evident early in life that she had a gift for writing. Had gotten in trouble for creating poetry showing the despair of her own village, and was punished because of it.
Education and Marriage Attended British Institute from Was forced into marriage to a mining engineer and was unable to continue her education and writing. Her marriage lasted 8 months. Ended up marrying her cousin and had three children with him. She traveled with him all over Egypt.
Resurrection of her Writing Rifaat published her first short story in Under the pseudonym of Alifa Rifaat, so that the topics discussed in her short stories did not embarrass her family.
Later Life In 1960 her husband demanded she stop writing, to which she did until he became sick and allowed her to begin writing again. Some of these stories included… - Eve Returns with Adam to Paradise (1975) - Who Can Man Be? (1981) - Distant View of a Minaret (short stories) (1983)
