BOOK 9 BEFORE THE FALL PARADISE LOST, IX.1-384

AIM: HOW AND WHY DOES MILTON EXPAND THE BIBLICAL STORY PRECEDING THE FALL?

WARM UP: WHAT IS THE MAIN TOOL YOU USE IN ORDER TO MAKE DECISIONS IN YOUR LIFE? (FOR EX: REASON, ETHICS, CONSEQUENCES, FRIENDS, FAMILY, ETC.)

QUESTIONS What BIG claims does Milton make for his epic at the start of Book IX? 1.If this were a piece of music, what kind of key shift would take place at the start of Book IX? 1.If this is now to be a tragedy, there must be a hero and tragic flaw. What are these?

QUESTIONS Describe the discussion between Adam and Eve. What does each character want? What do they say? How do they say it? 5. How does their discussion relate to the issue of harmony/togetherness versus separation?

QUESTIONS In what way is Eve, as a creation, different from Adam? What are her negative attributes? Does she have positive qualities and abilities that Adam does not? 7. Is Eve subservient to Adam? In what ways? 8. How do Adam and Eve handle their facilities for reason and passion? 9. Is Eve like Satan?

BACK TO THE WARM UP What is the main tool ADAM AND EVE are meant to be using to make or guide their decisions? What is Eve using instead? How about Adam? Compare to our list on the chalkboard?
