From: Right Ventricular Dysfunction and Remodeling in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Without Pulmonary Hypertension J Am Coll Cardiol. 2013;62(12): doi: /j.jacc Histograms of PVR and PAC The figure displays the distribution of PVR and PAC at rest in an outpatient cohort of 98 patients with COPD. Seventy-six patients (79%) of the entire cohort had PVR above 1.5 Wood units (vertical dashed line in upper panel), corresponding to the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval for healthy controls (mean ± 1.96 SD) (35). The majority of patients at GOLD stage II (68%) had a PVR >1.5 Wood units. The lower limit of the 95% confidence interval for PAC was 6.3 ml/mm Hg (vertical dashed line in lower panel)(23). Ninety-four patients (96%) had a resting PA compliance below 6.3 ml/mm Hg. COPD = chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; GOLD = Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease; PAC = pulmonary artery compliance; PVR = pulmonary vascular resistance. Figure Legend:

Abbreviations as in Figure 1. PH = pulmonary hypertension; Wu = Wood units. Figure Legend:

(B) Mean body surface area indexed values for basal RV (RVD1) and proximal RV outflow tract dimensions (RVOT1) and RV thickness (RV WT) for the same 3 groups, also in relation to mPAP, are shown. In controls, mPAP was estimated by pulmonary artery–pulsed Doppler acceleration time, whereby mPAP = 79 − (0.45 × AcT) (14), in the no PH and PH groups by right heart catheterization. The correlation coefficient to invasive mPAP was 0.88 (p < 0.001) (see Fig. 4). *Significantly different from controls. †Significantly different from no PH. mPAP = mean pulmonary artery pressure; RV = right ventricular; other abbreviations as in Figures 1 and 2. PAAcT = pulmonary artery acceleration time. Figure Legend:
