PARTS OF THE TRIPLE BEAM BALANCE

The Triple Beam Balance Is used to measure MASS … or how much “stuff” is inside something Measurements are in grams (g) Is different from a SCALE

BASE The bottom of the Triple Beam Balance. Use BOTH hands on the base to carry the Triple Beam Balance!

PAN Where you place the specimen you are measuring. NEVER put liquids or corrosive material directly on the pan!

SCALE POINTER The pointer that indicates when the object on the pan is equal in mass to the mass on the beams.

ZERO ADJUSTMENT KNOB The small knob that you use to adjust the scale pointer to align with zero. Use this ONLY if your Triple Beam Balance is not “zeroed” when you begin your lab.

BEAMS Three bars that indicate 100’s, 10’s, and 1 grams.

RIDERS The sliding pointers that indicate how many grams of mass are on the pan. Make sure the riders are IN A NOTCH, otherwise your measurement will not be accurate.

Steps to use the TBB 1. Make sure the scale pointer is at zero. 2. If not, adjust the zero adjustment knob. 3. Place the object on the pan. 4. Adjust the HUNDREDS RIDER one notch at a time.

Steps… Continued 5. Adjust the TENS RIDER one notch at a time 6. Adjust the ONES RIDER until the scale pointer is again at zero. 7. Add the numbers from each of the beams together... And you have your mass!!
