Weather and Climate Supported study 1

What we are going to cover Weather recording instruments. Weather stations Weather symbols DepressionsAnti-cyclones Synoptic charts

But today we are going to draw on your knowledge! Task 1: You have a large piece of flip chart paper. You need to be in groups of 4.

Task 1. Write the heading that comes up down then everything you know about it. DO THIS ALONE YOU WILL SHARE YOUR INFORMATION AFTERWORDS. Heading 1: Weather recording instruments. Heading 1: Weather recording instruments. High Pressure Isobars Warm/Cold Fronts Depressions Anticyclones

Task 2 Weather recording instruments. For each picture: Name the weather recording instrument Say what it measures Say what the measurement comes in

Recording instruments

Q 1. What is this? rain gauge Rainfall is measured with a rain gauge.

Q2. What is this? What does it measure?

What is this?

What is this? What does it measure?

What is this?

Stevenson Screen. Holds Thermometers to measure temperature. The White paint means that it does not over heat and the slats in the sides means that a steady stream of air is always available. rain gauge Rainfall is measured with a rain gauge.

This is a sunshine recorder and it measures hours of sunshine in a day. The measurement it uses is hours. Q2. What is this? What does it measure?

This is a Rain Gauge. Rain falls into the funnel and is collected in a measuring beaker. The amount of rain is measured in mm.

This is an Anemometer. It measures wind speed. The measurement it uses is knots

This is a Wind Vane. The arrow points towards the direction that the wind is coming from. In this case it’s coming from the north it’s a northerly wind. It uses compass directions as a unit.

Forecasting the weather

For each of these locations, decide whether the weather station is well located. Write reasons for the answers you gave.

Task 3 Weather symbols What are the two types that you get? BBC Weather symbols (the easy ones) MET office symbols (the harder ones) Both are easy if you know them.

Weather Symbols

HOW IS WEATHER SHOWN ON A WEATHER MAP?

PP Weather Symbols

Re-cap of Depressions Depressions = LOW PRESSURE What does low pressure mean? What else do depressions have? Wind travels Anticlockwise and follows direction of isobars.

PP Geography revision

Re-cap of Anticyclones Anticyclones = HIGH PRESSURE What does high pressure mean?

Anticyclone in the Summer No clouds. Calm weather no wind. Warm.

Anticyclone in the winter No Clouds Calm weather, no wind. Cold! May have mist and ice.

Task 4 Past paper questions: One together then a carousel in 2’s

Questions? If we don’t have any then we need to think about next week. We are going to start with a Weather Quiz! Then we must decide what topic to cover.

Weather Quiz

1.Wind direction, cloud cover, weather and wind speed.,

2. Cloud cover and weather, wind speed and wind direction.,

3. What direction will the wind be travelling? 4. What will the weather be like in Edinburgh (the month is June)

5. What is the weather like in London? 6. Describe what the weather will be like over the next 24 hours in London. 7. What do fronts always bring?

10. Explain why you get rain at fronts.
