Hubble’s 25th Anniversary at Udvar-Hazy The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, in Chantilly, VA, hosted a special Family Day event honoring the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. STScI supported the event with exhibit space that included an exploration of the invisible universe with an infrared camera and Hubble’s largest image ever taken, the Andromeda galaxy. STScI also recruited scientists from the Goddard Space Flight Center to help staff the Andromeda exhibit, thus providing continual contact between the public and astronomers that use Hubble data. 5/22/15Bonnie Eisenhamer/STScI The Family Day event was attended by 7,560 people. The event also was broadcasted through Live Stream and NASA TV.

X-STEM Symposium A STScI outreach astronomer presented at the USA Science and Engineering Festival’s (USASEF) X-STEM Symposium at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The presentation, “The Universe: More than Meets the Eye,” explored the nature of light and how astronomers glean information from it through color science, spectra, and non-visible wavelength observations. Students and their parents participated in interactive observations and discussions using red and blue filter glasses and diffraction grating glasses. X-STEM was attended by over 3,500 students in grades /22/15Bonnie Eisenhamer/STScI X-STEM is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) symposium for middle through high school students. It features interactive presentations and workshops by top STEM role models who aim to inspire kids about STEM careers.

Hubble Featured during the Goddard Space Flight Center’s Sunday Experiment A STScI outreach astronomer participated in the Goddard Space Flight Center’s “Sunday Experiment” at the Goddard Visitor Center. The May event featured the Hubble Space Telescope and its 25 years of scientific discovery. A hands-on activity on “Galaxy Classification in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field” was presented. After completing the activity, attendees got to take home a lithograph of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, a graphic organizer on galaxy shapes, and an Amazing Space bookmark. Approximately 90 students and their parents visited the Goddard Visitor Center for this two- hour event. 5/22/15Bonnie Eisenhamer/STScI

JWST STEM Innovation Project (SIP): Reservoir High School STScI staff visited three Engineering Design classes at Reservoir High School in Fulton, MD. The visit was part of a student “Show Case” of completed SIP projects. Students presented several types of projects, including a 3D printed JWST model, PowerPoint presentations, and original poems/songs that reflected student knowledge about JWST. STScI staff were able to interact with students in each class and speak with them individually about their research and completed projects. Reservoir High School is a part of the Howard County Public School System, and is the first Howard County school to complete the SIP. 5/22/15Bonnie Eisenhamer/STScI The James Webb STEM Innovation Project (SIP) is an interdisciplinary, standards-based project that focuses on the engineering aspects and potential scientific discoveries of JWST, while incorporating elements of project-based learning.
