Chicken Wing Dissection

scalpel: cuts through tissue forceps: moves tissue aside (tweezers) dissecting needle: separates connective tissue Equipment

scissors: cuts through skin once scalpel has made initial cut probe: moves structures aside without damaging them

Chicken Wing – External Features

Chicken Wing Dissection

Chicken Wing - Removing the Skin

Chicken Wing - Muscles

When the skin is removed you can see the muscles of the wing and how each one is attached to the skeleton.

Run the forceps along the length of each muscle until you reach the tendon. The tendon is the white, tough, fibrous material that connects the muscle to the bone.

Chicken Wing - Bones

Elbow Joint - Showing Ligaments Note: Ligaments connect bones together. At the surface of each bone forming the joint is a white, shiny, slippery substance called cartilage.

Chicken Wing – Dissection Instructions: 1. Follow the procedure on your handout. (steps 1 – 13) 2. As you follow each step, answer any questions (compare, describe, draw, etc.) that you encounter in the procedure. (3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) 3. Do Analyze and Evaluate questions a – e. Hand in one per pair.

The chicken wing and the human hand are very similar. It clearly shows evolutionary links. Match the chicken wing parts shown on the diagram with the equivalent human part. Part B - Part C - Part D - Part E - Part F - Part G -
