Predict: Think about what might happen (guess)

Good Readers Good readers make some predictions before they read – Look at the front cover – Look at the back cover – Look at the pictures – Read the first few sentences Good readers make some predictions when they are reading – Stop and think (just a little) – Were my predictions correct? – Do I need to change my predictions? Ask yourself – “What will happen?” Ask yourself – “What will happen next?”

1. Predict: Think about what will happen before you read 2. Read some of the text 3. Think about your predictions. Are they correct? Do you need to change them? 4. Read more of the text 5. Think about your predictions. Are they correct? Do you need to change them?

Mary’s Farm

What do you think this story will be about? What will happen in this story?

A Life-Saving Cow Mary lived on a farm. There was a river running through Mary’s farm. One year, in October it rained all day for seven days in a row. Mary was worried about her cows because the river was getting higher and higher and bigger and bigger. As she tried to herd her cows to higher ground, she slipped and hit her head on a fallen tree trunk.

The fall knocked her out for a moment or two. When she woke up, Lizzie, one of her oldest and favourite cows, was licking her face. The water was rising. Mary got up and began walking slowly with Lizzie. The water was now waist high. Mary’s pace got slower and slower. Finally, all she could do was to throw her arm around Lizzie’s neck and try to hang on.

About 20 minutes later, Lizzie pulled herself and Mary out of the flood water and onto a bit of high land, a small island now in the middle of all the water. Even though it was about lunchtime, the sky was so dark and the rain and lightning so bad that it took rescuers another two hours to find Mary.

A helicopter came to help people caught in the flood. They raised Mary into the helicopter and took her to hospital. When the flood subsided two days later, Mary immediately went back to the “island.”

You decide what happens next. Was Lizzie the cow waiting? Was Lizzie okay?
