Task: You have been asked to create a audio/visual presentation that analyses a range of iconic songwriters and songs and the genres/styles in which they operate/d. Your presentation should address the following features for a minimum of four different genres/styles: Genre – what is the style of music? Lyrical Context – what are the lyrics about? How were they constructed? Do they rhyme? Etc. Song Construction- What is the order of sections? What key is the song in? What instruments are playing? Is there a specific hook/riff/chord pattern? Historical Context – When was the song written? Does it have any historical context or importance? How has the song been used since?

Example song : "Blowin' in the Wind" Genre – Folk music Lyrical Context – Protesting, The lyrics to this song are very metaphorical and have a lot of meaning to the song writer Song Construction- This song is played and sung in a verse,Corse format. This sons key is E. The instruments in this song are an acoustic guitar. The hook come from the vocal side of the song when it come to the course. Historical Context – This song was written in 1967 and the meaning of this song was a protest song which was very popular which means it had a big influence on the culture and the people in the late 60s. Folk music is a very unique genre of music because of how it is composed and the instrumentation in it but it is also very different because of the simple riffs and chord structure of most folk songs.

Example song : “9 to 5" Genre – country pop Lyrical Context – The lyrics in this song are abut the normal working hour shift and an everyday persons working life, the lyrics in the song also. Song Construction-This song is also structured in a verse chorus style or song writing, the song and lyrics are also very melodic and catchy. Historical Context – This song was originally written for the comedy film 9 to 5, and is modern used today in some comedy sketches. The instruments used in country music consist of a guitar, banjo these instrument together create a very funky vibe, and the lyrics of country music also play a very big part in country music this is because of how the are sung.

Example song : “Smells like Teen Spirit" Genre – Rock Lyrical Context – The lyrics of this song are about school and being free. Song Construction- The structure of this song is the basic structure of most music verse chorus format, the key this song is written in is E, the instrumentation in this song are made up of, electric guitar, drum kit, bass guitar and a solo guitar, In this song there is a simple chord pattern of, F, B flat, A flat, D flat. Historical Context – This song was written and released in 1991 the historical context behind this song was really about being free to do what you want. This genre of music is a little different to rock and roll, is is sung in a much harder way and the instruments are played so the sound distorted this is because it give the music a rough edge to it. They also use Electric guitars which is normally played with a lot of trills which makes it sound very hard and metallic which is what rock and roll is about, also the drum kit, how it is normally played is very aggressive this is also another important aspect to rock and roll music.

Example song : "A Hard Day´s Night" Genre – Rock, pop music. Lyrical Context – The lyrics in this song are about a hard day, and they are sung in a very rock fashion Song Construction- This song is written in verse chorus format, the key of the song is in, the instruments used are drums and electric guitar a bass guitar. Historical Context – This song was written in This song in it time was very popular and changed peoples fashion trend and also the artist of the song was black and when this song came out there still racism that why this song has historical value. Rock and roll music, the instruments used to create this genre of music work very well together, Electric guitar which is normally played in a very erythematic way and is also sung in that form as well. Rock and roll music also has its unique flair to it, and to create this kind of music you will need a simple chord structure and most of the time a very simple but fast strumming method on the guitar.

Example song : “3 Little Birds” Genre – reggae Music. Lyrical Context – This song is about 3 birds sitting on Bob Marley's door step. How were they constructed? Do they rhyme? Etc. Song Construction- This song is written with a verse chorus format, the instruments used in this song are an acoustic guitar, this song was written in an A major key, this song also has a specific rhythm to it which is created by the us and down strumming of the guitar which is continuous. Historical Context – This song was written in Reggae is a unique genre of music this is because it is played off beat, and not in time with a simple count this is what gives reggae music its unique flair, also the instrumentation used in reggae music is a lot different to other genres of music for example bass guitars, organs, acoustic guitars. These are a very weird combination of instruments to put together but with reggae music they work well together.

Example song : “Loose yourself” Genre – Rap Music. Lyrical Context – The lyrics in this song are about taking the one opportunity you have do do something good, the historical context behind this song relates to Eminem's life, this song was written in 2001 and because it is rap music some of the phrases in the verses rhyme, also this song has been used in movies since release date Song Construction- This song is written in a verse, verse chorus format, which shows that it is a little different to most other music out there most rap music is written this way. In this song and in a lot of rap songs, what makes up the beat is the drum machines, this is because of the way the kicks, snares, and hi hats are put together, and this is the most popular way for rap instrumentals are put together. Also rap music is very popular not just because of the catchy beats but also because of the lyrics, sometimes they can rhyme but other times they have a unique rythmatic flow to them.

Comparing All these types of genres have very different features and sound nothing a like, but the instrumentation used in some of these genres of music are very similar, the main difference is how the instruments are played for example Rock and reggae, they both use guitars in when composing music but in rock the guitar is played to make it sound very distorted and in reggae it is played in a very slow, melodic way and they usually use acoustic guitars. Rap music also has a lot of things in common with other genres, in a lyrical context, most other genres have a lyrical structure and sometimes rhyme in there lyrics. All genres of music can be linked by different things but the all have very different features which is what make each genre of music unique and also very distinct in sound, they all create different atmospheres around them as well and may have different goals, for example rap music is mainly for entertainment, but for example the beetles used there music to protest.
