TONE & MOOD

WHAT IS MOOD? OVERALL FEELING OF THE WORK (ATMOSPHERE) THE EMOTIONS THE READER FEELS WHILE READING IMAGES, DIALOGUE, SETTING & PLOT ARE USED TO CREATE MOOD

WORDS THAT DESCRIBE MOOD:

IDENTIFY THE MOOD Bouncing into the room, she lit up the vicinity with a joyous glow on her face as she told about her fiancé and their wedding plans. Gently smiling, the mother tenderly tucked the covers up around the child’s neck, and carefully, quietly left the room making sure to leave a comforting ray of light shining through the opened door. She huddled in the corner, clutching her tattered blanket and shaking convulsively as she feverishly searched the room for the unknown dangers that awaited her. Joyous, Excited, Happy Calm, Loving, Sentimental Frightened, Suspenseful, Mysterious

WHAT IS TONE? THE WAY FEELINGS ARE EXPRESSED AUTHOR’S ATTITUDE TOWARD THE SUBJECT, THE CHARACTERS, THE SITUATION CONVEYED THROUGH THE AUTHOR’S WORDS AND DETAILS IT IS NOT “WHAT” YOU SAY, BUT “HOW” YOU SAY IT. USE CONTEXT CLUES TO DETERMINE TONE

WORDS THAT DESCRIBE TONE:

IDENTIFY THE TONE Drawing the attention of his classmates as well as his teacher, the student dared to challenge his professor’s intelligence by interrogating him about philosophy. Bursting through he door, the flustered mother screamed uncontrollably at her for breaking curfew. He cautiously glanced behind him, for fear of his imagined pursuers, then hurriedly walked on, jumping at the slightest sound even of a leaf crackling under his own foot. Pompous, Suspicious, Angry, Rageful, Annoyed, Aggravated Frightened, Nervous, Worried

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW EXAMPLE FROM MENTOR TEXTHOW IS IT DONE? (explain technique) (Key words & Phrases) WHY IS IT DONE? (Why does the author use the craft? Why is it important to the story? What does it show?)
